William (Bill) Doan, 65 of Putney passed away at the University of Kentucky Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer.
Bill was born Jan. 15, 1949 at Crummies, KY. He was a lifelong resident of Harlan Co. and member of the Putney Bible Church. He had worked for Guardian Industries in Michigan. He retired from Bow Valley and Great Western Coal Co. He loved sports and had coached the boy’s basketball at Rosspoint Elementary, assistant girls coach at Cawood Elementary and Hall Junior High. Served as former President and player agent of the Harlan Little League, it was under Bill’s leadership that the girl’s softball was organized and Rhea Field was built. In the spring of 2014 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Harlan Little League. In his community of Putney Bill was well know for his care of countless stray animals.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer Lynn Doan; his grandparents that raised him, Frank and Sally Carnes Doan; grandparents, Phoebe and Henry Pennington; his parents, Otis, Sr. and Mary Helen Doan.
He is survived by his wife, Debbie Doan; children, Shannon (Michael) Doan Duff, and Shaun Doan all of Putney; his beloved granddaughter, Sheldyn Duff of Georgetown; his beloved dog “Autumn”; his brothers, Dennis (Pam) Doan of Florida, Frank (Merita) Doan of Tremont, Otis (Lois) Doan, Jr of Cawood; sister, Sue (Dr. Eric) Wake of Williamsburg; he leaves several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends to mourn his passing.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be 2:00pm Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Huff Park with Rev. Clay Groves and Rev. Kyle Burnette to speak. The family asks that you dress casual and if you see fit to wear “flip flops” in honor of Bill and to share your favorite memory of him.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, 1500 College Way, Lexington, KY 40502.
