Smith Gilbert, 97 of Harlan, KY passed away December 7, 2016, at his home in Teetersville, KY. He was born June 25, 1919 in Harlan to the late Howard and Ethel Ball Gilbert.
Mr. Gilbert served in the United States Army Infantry. After being honorably discharged, he entered the Army Air Corp and served until the end of World War II. One of his fondest memories was serving the honor guard for President Franklin Roosevelt when he visited the Panama Canal.
After leaving the service, he worked at Harlan Builders, eventually becoming co-owner of the business. Shortly after full retirement, he worked for Harlan Motor Company.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Gilbert is preceded in death by his brothers, Glenn, Gene, Robert, and Howard, Jr.
Left to mourn his passing is his wife of 73 years, Josephine Brittain Gilbert; his children, Larry (Gail) Gilbert of London, KY; Linda (Joseph) Renfro of Flat Lick, KY; Patrick (Rosemary) Gilbert of Harlan, KY; grandchildren, Kevin Gilbert and Kelli Gilbert Smith of London; as well as 5 great grandchildren.
All services for Mr. Gilbert will be Private at Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Phil Green officiating. Burial will be in the Resthaven Cemetery at Keith, KY with members of the Harlan Honor Guard serving as Pallbearers. Military Rites will be observed by the Harlan Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers the family ask memorials be made to the Harlan Honor Guard, PO Box 704, Baxter, KY 40806 in Honor of Mr. Gilbert’s service to his country.
