Samuel A. Shope, 90 of Teetersville passed away Wednesday Aug. 20, 2014 at his home with family by his side.
SA was born Nov. 10, 1923 in Harlan to the late Amos and Mossie Crider Shope. He was a retired coal miner after many years of service. He was an Honorary Deacon of the Teetersville Church of God, but in later years he attended New Life Assembly of God, Tremont. He was a very humble man who never met a stranger; he worked hard over his years to provide for his family that he so dearly loved. He was a proud member of the United Mine Workers of America and for the last 16 years had attended the Harlan Senior Center that had become like family to him.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Luda Hensley Shope; his brothers, Hamilton Shope and Frank Shope; sisters, Gladys Morris, Evelyn McKenzie, Cumile Moore, Vine Hazel Welch, Sue Ella Pace, and Lucinda Shope Blanton.
He is survived by his children, Jerry Hensley of Indiana, Frank Shope of Teetersville, and Pamela Louise Golic of Michigan; brothers, Dan Shope of Florida, Willard Shope of Harlan; sister, Ann Shope of Harlan; 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren; he also leaves several nieces, nephews, other relatives and his friends at the Harlan Senior Center to mourn his passing.
Visitation will be 11:00 am – 1:00 pm Saturday (Aug. 23) at the Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home.
Funeral services will follow at 1:00 pm in the Chapel of Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home with Pastor Eddie Estep officiating.
Burial will follow in the Resthaven Cemetery at Keith, KY.
Flowers are welcome but the family request memorials suggested to the Harlan Senior Center, PO Box 1246, Harlan, KY 40831 or to Hospice of the Bluegrass Mountain Heritage, PO Box 189 Harlan, KY 40831.
