Otto Stewart 85, of Smith, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2023, at the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital after a very long illness.
He was a believer of Holiness faith and was a member of Faith Holiness Church in Smith. Otto was a retired underground coal miner, working most of his career at Bow Valley Coal Resources, Great Western Coal Company and New Horizons Coal Company where he was a shuttle car operator. Otto was born in Harlan on Sept.29, 1937, to the late William & Birdie Stewart, of Smith. In addition to his parents, Otto was preceded in death by brothers: Pete Stewart and Joe Stewart; Sisters: Bessie Moore, Annie Davis and Shirley Cooper. Left to cherish Otto’s memory are his wife: Iva Stewart, Pineville; daughter: Vickie (Mike) Anderson, Pineville; son: Cameron Daniels, Cumberland; brothers: Jim (Cassie) Stewart, Pathfork; sister: Della Mae Hensley, Smith, and Clifford Roark Cincinnati.
Otto was a very proud grandfather to Morgan (Jonny) Blount, Richmond, Stephen (Brittany) Anderson, Pineville, and David Vanwinkle, Richmond. Also surviving are several special nieces and nephews.
Early in his life, Otto was an avid hunter and spent his spare time in the mountains of southeast Kentucky. Otto was also a lifetime UK sports fan and loved debating his family on the trials and tribulations of being part of the Big Blue Nation. The family wants to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff of doctors and nurses from the 5th floor and ICU at Harlan ARH. This wonderful group of caregivers was so diligent and thorough with their love and dedication to our beloved Pap Otto.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Faith Holiness Church, 12824 Hwy 987, Smith, KY 40831. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. and the funeral will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Spencer Burkhart officiating. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Graveside services will follow at the Hensley Cemetery in Smith.
