JoEllen Hale, of Harlan, KY, was born October 8, 1955 at the Harlan Hospital to the late John & Myrtle Copeland Hale. Also preceding her in death is her twin sister Leslie. She passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at the age of 62.
She confessed Christ in her early twenties and joined First Baptist Church under Pastor James Raglin.
Having been a lifelong resident of Harlan, she attended Rosenwald High School, and then graduated from Harlan High School in 1973. She attended Southeast Community College where she received her associate’s degree and later attended Lindsey Wilson College having gained her degree in social work.
JoEllen was head teacher at Headstart for a number of years. She served Pathfinders as the outreach coordinator for several years, after Pathfinders closed, JoEllen opened a business called Southeast Kentucky Independent Living where she served as the Director.
She was a community activist, member of the Black Parents and Friends, Harlan Co. Multi-Culture group. She was a bible teacher under the direction of Miss Nancy Johnson for years. She taught a bible class at the Harlan Church of Christ. She loved to sing and was a member of Miss Nancy’s Christmas Cantata.
JoEllen leaves to cherish her memory, her brothers, Michael (Beverly) Hale, John A. Hale; her sister, Deborah Hale; nephews, David and Jonathan; anyone who knew JoEllen knew her greatest joys were her nieces, Justus and Journey, her nephew, Canaan who all loved to call her “Doe Doe”
On Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 12:00 pm the family invites you to a Celebration of Life service honoring the life of their loved one at the Mount Olive Baptist Church, with Sister Angela Lee speaking.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorials to the Mount Olive Baptist Church in memory of JoEllen.
