Jerry Larkin Shepherd, 87 , passed away peacefully at his home on March 4th, 2024. Jerry was born on June 19th, 1936 in Harlan, Ky to Martha and Harry B. Shepherd. He started his working career at a very young age, delivering newspapers throughout sunshine and areas of Harlan. At an early age in his life, before graduating, he decided he was going to be a pilot. He worked three jobs at one time to be able to pursue his passion in flying. After graduating from Harlan Independent High school, he declined a scholarship at union college in engineering to finally begin his flying career after locating a flight instructor in Manchester, Ky in the late 1950s. He was very successful in his aviation career in which became his livelihood. His accomplishments in aviation started from private pilot to commercial pilot, instrument rated, multi instrument rated, flight instructor, multi engine flight instructor, instrument instructor, and multi engine instrument instructor. Over his career of flying for multiple coal companies and owning his own flying service, Mountain Air Service, he also has had the honor of flying governors, politicians, and many coaches with his most memorable trips being ones with Rick Pitino. In the later years of his career he went on to be a helicopter pilot. In addition to flying, he was a proud member of Harlan Lodge 879 F & AM for over 65 years. Jerry enjoyed the lake, traveling, and his family. He is preceeded in death by his parents; Martha and Harry B. Shepherd, brothers; Harry B. Shepherd Jr. (Red) and Dallas Wayne Shepherd. Beloved survivors include his daughter; Becky Cox (Garry), grandchildren; Kris Cox (Carmela), Kelly Casolari (Logan), great grand children; Kenna and Kate Casolari. Left to cherish his memories is his long time companion, Terry Howard. The family would also like to thank dear friends and caregivers, Judy Howard and Sandy Kinner along with a host of many that cared about Jerry.In keeping with Jerry’s wishes a simple Graveside service will be 1:00 Friday (March 8) at the Resthaven Cemetery Chapel with Rev Butch Clem officiating. Masonic Rites will be observed by Harlan Lodge 879 F & AM. He will then be laid to rest in the Resthaven Cemetery at Keith, Ky.
