Gary Wayne Maddy was born on June 16, 1945, in the small coal mining town of Pemberton, WV, to Ora (nee Cannady) and Wilbur Maddy. He was the youngest of 12 siblings.
At the age of 17, Gary enlisted in the US Army, and in 1965, he sustained permanent injuries during his service in Vietnam. Following this, he spent a year in a coma at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where upon awakening, he was affectionately called their "little miracle.” He returned home to his family as a decorated veteran, honored with two Purple Hearts. Gary remained in the care and company of his family from 1966 until the day of his passing at home in Kenvir, KY on July 27, 2024 at the age of 79. Gary was known for his resilience, deep love for his country, his family, and, above all, his faith.
A Celebration of Life and observance of his Military Service will be held at a later date in the fall at the Bay Pines National Cemetery in St. Petersburg, FL.
