Elmer H. Smith, 83 of Baxter, KY died Thursday, August 14, 2014 at the Harlan Heath and Rehabilitation Center.  He was born June 22, 1931 at Highsplint, KY to the late George and Pearl Smith.  Elmer loved his country and proudly served in the United States Air Force.  He was a retired supervisor with the Mine Safety and Health Administration.  He was a deacon at the Harlan Baptist Church and was a member of the Glory Singers.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Rowland Smith and his sister Evelyn Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rose Smith, son George Smith (fiancé Norma Thomas); granddaughter, Rebecca Smith (fiancé Matt Cope); grandson Brad Smith (wife Kayla Smith).  Also surviving is sister-in-law Georgia Smith; special friends Bucky Jones, Bob Rhea, David Karst, David Hill and Jim Robinson; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Saturday, August 16, from 12:00 – 2:00 PM in the chapel of Anderson-Laws and Jones Funeral Home.  Funeral Services will be conducted following the visitation at 2:00 PM also in the chapel of Anderson-Laws and Jones Funeral Home.  Brother David Hill and Brother Jim Robinson will be officiating the services.

Interment will follow the funeral in the Resthaven Cemetery at Keith, Kentucky  Members of the Harlan Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers.  Members of the Harlan Glory Singers and Ron Rains’ Sunday School Class at Harlan Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations to be made to Christ’s Hands, 112 Railroad Street, Harlan, KY  40831; Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, KY  40804; or the Harlan Baptist Church Kitchen Fund.
