Emblem

Edward H. Anderson, 97 of Harlan, Kentucky passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 20, 2024.

Edward was born August 6, 1926 in Brookside, Kentucky, being the first of three children born to Jesse Anderson and Pearl Anderson.

Growing up in Harlan, he attended Harlan Independent Schools and played football for the Green Dragons. He left school early, at the age of 17, to enlist in the United States Navy during World War II, and proudly served as Seaman Second Class aboard the USS George C. Clymer, a troop transport ship. He traveled the South Pacific and saw action in several key battles including Okinawa, Leyte Gulf, and the Philippines before arriving in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan after the bombing. He was honorably discharged on June 9, 1946.

Upon his return home, he worked in the mines at Mary Helen alongside his dad for several years. Underground work was not for him so he began doing construction work, building coal preparation plants in places like Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Alabama until his retirement.

In 1949, he was married to Geneva Cole and they remained together for 38 years.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Pearl Anderson; the mother of his daughters, Geneva C. Anderson; and his brother, Ronnie Anderson.

He is survived by his girls; Linda (Micky) Bowling of Harlan, KY, and Brenda Shope (Jose' Maldonado) of Palatka, FL, three granddaughters; Ashley (Steven) Hatfield of Harlan, KY, Jennifer (Billy) Bennett of Harlan, KY, and Juli (Larry) Williamson of Palatka, FL, five great-grandchildren; Jacob Madon (Natasha Farley) of Harlan, KY, Kaleb and Kayleigh Bennet of Harlan, KY, Jaiden and Evan Williamson of Palatka, FL, and his special little buddy, great-great-granddaughter; Ashlynn and her big sister Emersyn. Also surviving is his sister; Peggy Bless of Cincinnati, OH, and his sister-in-law; Marie Anderson of Corbin, KY, and his nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Sunday (June 23) from 2 to 4 PM at Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be Monday (June 24) at 11 AM at the Resthaven Cemetery Chapel in Keith, KY with Pastor Tim Goshen officiating. Military rites will be observed by the Harlan Honor Guard.
