Earl Dale Ball, Sr., 90 of Brookside, Kentucky died Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at his residence following a brief illness.

The son of the late Rufus and Myrtle Stewart Ball he was born March 14, 1924 at Brookside. He was a graduate of Evarts High School and a 1949 Graduate of Eastern Kentucky University; he then received his Masters in Education from Union College. He joined the United States Navy and served his country during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific area. He received Commendation Ribbon and the Victory Medal from Admiral James Forrestal.

He began his Teaching career at Evarts High School in 1949. He retired from Harlan Vocational School after having over 20 years of service with them, leaving a lasting mark on his students, who many are now ministers, business owners, and talented employees having been taught a trade by Mr. Ball.

After retirement he continued to work for local Coal Companies as an electrician and mechanic, but he mostly devoted more time to his love of Furniture making, markentry, machining, lapidary work of making quality stones, and became a very Accomplished Artist.

He was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church of Harlan.

Besides his parents he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Evelyn Wilson Ball; his brother, Dennis Ball.

He is survived by his children, Earl Dale Ball, Jr and wife Juanita Asher Ball and Judith Ball Howard and husband Al; grandchildren, Mary Katelin Evelyn Ball, Dana Evelyn Howard, Allen Adam-Earl Howard and wife Amber, Meghan Evelyn Howard; great grandchildren, Judith Michaela Napier, Carleigh Elizabeth Napier, Adam Ruben Napier, and Delia Pearl Howard; sister, Lois Rowland; special friends, Mac ”Duke” Bowers and Ernest Curry. He leaves other relatives, friends and his former students to mourn his passing.

Visitation will be Saturday (July 5) from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm at the Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home.

Funeral services will follow at 6:00 pm in the Chapel of Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home with his former student Rev. Gary Craig, Sr. officiating.

Private graveside services will be held Sunday at the Ball Family Cemetery at Brookside with military rites being observed by the Harlan Honor Guard who will serve as Pallbearers also.

Honorary Pallbearers are Mac “Duke” Bowers, Ernest Curry, Allen Howard, Adam Napier, Ernest Miller, Tyler and Todd Bowman.
