Dorothy Melissa Carver (née Wheeler), aged 53, died March 3, 2022, after being diagnosed with Stage IV appendix cancer on September 1, 2020. She was the beloved eldest daughter of the late Wendell Ellis Wheeler and Margaret Thompson Wheeler of Harlan. In addition to her mother, Melissa leaves behind her sweet, loving husband of 27 years and caregiver, Brent, and the one whom she often just called “My heart,” her adored son Logan Ellis Carver of Lexington. Also left to mourn her passing are her sister Kara (Shannon) Elam, nephews Jacob Wyatt Elam and Jackson Wheeler Elam, God-Daughter Gabrielle Anne Banton Simpson (Kelly and Glady), and her many coworkers and friends. Melissa was preceded in death by her Uncle “Cha” Thompson and faithful companion Lilly.
Born and raised in Harlan, Melissa accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior at an early age and loved sharing her faith with others. She graduated from UK with a degree in English in 1992, then went on to complete her BSN at EKU in 2007. Nursing allowed Melissa’s best qualities to shine. She was kind and compassionate, quick to share a joke and could be feisty from time to time. Let’s be real. She was feisty most of the time. She also had an uncanny ability to quote movies and sing song lyrics, and found it impossible not to dance if she heard a good beat going. Melissa loved people and left an indelible impression on everyone she met. So, grab a pencil for your hair and join us to remember and celebrate her life.
