Bobbie Lee Thomas, 84, formerly of Harlan, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, October, 4, 2014, after a short illness. Bobbie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Tommy Lee, her second husband, Vernon Thomas, and her dearly loved son, Larry Lee. She is survived by a son, David Lee, London, England, a daughter, Cathy Lee, Lexington, Kentucky, her loving sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Gil Litteken, Spring City, Tennessee, daughter-in-law, Jeanne Ann Lee, Harlan, three wonderful grandsons, Jeremy Lee (Denise), Harlan, Jonathon Lee (Jennifer), Harlan, Jared Lee (Hannah), Knoxville, Tennessee, two very special nephews Scott Fuller (Jerilee), Auburn Alabama and Joe Fuller (Robin), Statesboro, Georgia. Also, surviving are seven great-grandchildren, Kevin Thomas, Grant, Ethan, Isabella, Madelyn, Annabelle, and Eden Clark of whom she was very proud.
Bobbie was born in Harlan County to Curtis and Grace Hawks. Her father moved to Harlan from Pennington Gap, Virginia, and married Grace Ledford, Cawood, Kentucky. They were blessed with one child, Betty Jo, who died as an infant, and another, Tommy, who was tragically killed at the age of six. Bobbie was very influential in the raising of her younger sister, Judy, who shared her love of family and spiritual growth for the remainder of her life.
Many know Bobbie Lee from her dedicated service processing claims for the unemployed during her tenure with the Department of Human Resources from 1956-1988. Her professionalism was inspired by warmth and understanding. Bobbie was a working mother and a devoted wife. Family was central to her values and priorities. Bobbie loved her family. She loved her friends. She loved the friends of her children. She also loved her community. She was well known for her love of music, humor, and companionship around a table, filled with the joys of cooking. Her spirituality was reflected in every aspect of her daily life.
She will be greatly missed by many. She brought love and kindness, intelligence and compassion to all her interactions.
A memorial service celebrating Bobbie’s life will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2014, at Anderson-Laws Funeral Home in Harlan. Visitation will be from 1:00 until 3:00 followed by the memorial service. Graveside services will follow at the Resthaven Cemetary Chapel.
