On Friday, April 6, 2018, Axie Belle Henderson Pollitte, a resident at Tri-Cities Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, passed from this life and entered the kingdom of heaven. She was 101 years old, having been born March 10, 1917, in Bell County, Ky. She was the daughter of Andrew and Emily Poff Henderson and the youngest and last surviving of ten children. Mrs. Pollitte was preceded in death by her parents, all nine siblings, and Earlbert D. Pollitte, the former Harlan City Chief of Police and her husband of almost 50 years. She lived in Harlan County for over 70 years.
She was a graduate of Bell County High School and received a certificate in real estate marketing from SECC Continuing Education. She had been a nurse at the Evans Medical Clinic in Middlesboro, KY, and at the old Harlan Hospital. After retiring from full time nursing, she became a private duty nurse for homebound or convalescing patients. She and her husband also owned and operated Pollitte’s Grocery and Meat Market on North Main Street and the Pollitte Apartments on Cumberland Avenue for several years.
The Pollittes were members of Harlan United Methodist Church, and were also supporters of the Harlan High School Band where their two youngest children were members. They were both avid UK basketball fans.
Surviving Mrs. Pollitte are her children: Caroline P. Fox (widow of Ronnie); Dianne P. Corriston and husband Michael; and Earlbert Denver (Dink) Pollitte, all of Harlan County. Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Annette Ellison Morris and Jim, Jacksonville, FL; Howard Ellison, Jr., Oklahoma City, OK; Lee Ellison and Sabra, Charleston, SC; Lance Ellison, Diberville, MS; Bryan Hensley and Elizabeth, Harlan; Kit Hensley, Benham; Tim Hensley and Tabatha, Nicholasville, KY; and Casey Pollitte, Harlan. Also surviving are 12 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren, plus a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and her beloved sister-in-law, Bessie Henderson, Claiborne County, TN. Very special to her were friends from the Harlan High Rise Apartments where she lived for several years. She also leaves behind a host of friends in Harlan and Bell Counties. Axie will be missed by one and all.
Visitation for Axie Henderson Pollitte will be held on Thursday, April 12 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the chapel of Anderson-Laws and Jones Funeral Home, Harlan, followed by the funeral at the funeral home at 6:00 p.m. with Rev. Kyle Burnette officiating. Burial will be at the Olivet Church Cemetery in Rectorville, Mason County, KY., on Friday, April 13, 2018.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, great-grandsons, and Bryan Edward (Bembo) Morgan.
The Pollitte family extends great appreciation to Alley Kats Beauty Salon, Katherine Banks and Carla Hartsell for their unfailing kindness and consideration over the years, to the administration and staff of the Tri-Cities Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and also to John, Owen, and the staff of Anderson-Laws & Jones Funeral Home for their friendship, assistance and professionalism in our time of bereavement.
